Through two themes dealing with the perception of nature in Rouen in the 21st century, these two talks during outdoor visits will provide a better grasp of how impressionist painters contributed to changing the view of nature, in a city famous for its industries. The first, in the city centre of Rouen, will provide a natural history of Rouen, an industrial town renowned for its port and its textile factories, which was to inspire the impressionists thanks to its shifting light, its architectural forms and its smoke.
By transcribing modern life, painters seized on the town’s nature, which was then undergoing rapid changes. The second will take place on the hill of Sainte-Catherine, a genuine natural sanctuary overlooking Rouen. From Bonington’s romantic scenes to Cartier-Bresson’s photographs, without forgetting Monet’s famous views of Rouen, the iconography, available via smartphone, will show the evolution of the interactions between town and nature in Rouen during the 19th and 20th centuries.
