La Seine vue par les peintres de l'école de Rouen

During the last quarter of the 19th century, the artistic world of Rouen was still firmly stuck in the academic tradition. However, a group of young painters took their inspiration from Impressionism, which they discovered during a trip to the capital, so as to revolutionise their practices. This was the birth of the Rouen School who took up their brushes to produce their work in Normandy, in continuity with the impressionist masters who had already visited this territory. Among the many motifs on offer in the region, the Seine was at the heart of their preoccupations. Whether it was bordered by orchards or factories, with teeming activities or bathed in calmness, they all depicted it. Despite the permanence of this Normand theme, these painters followed pictorial evolutions: from Impressionism to Cubism, while taking in Neo-Impressionism and the Fauve movement, they constantly renewed their ways of depicting the river.
